We need to put brake on speeding drivers

-

I’M a resident on Market Street in Whitworth, more precisely Scarr Terrace.

I have lived here about 18 months now and from day one, 12 July 2016, I have noticed that the amount of vehicles that speed past my property is unbelievable – scooters, motorbikes, cars and commercial vehicles, including heavy haulage vehicles.

Now I have read the story of the yellow Ford Focus and heard the commotion that night but at the time never knew what it was all about.

From Bacup to just before where that ●●A Ford Focus was split in two after smashing into a bus stop on Market Street in Whitworth, on November 12 accident happened there are five speed cameras that do not work.

I know this as I have been overtaken by vehicles at speed at these same locations.

I have contacted local councillors and local police and have yet to get a response.

This is not the first incident on this road that speed has been a factor and won’t be the last.

Something needs to be done with regards to the speeding.

This is not limited to a specific time, it is all day, everyday. If something is not done soon someone will be hurt, or worse, dead ..... Allun Wright via email

WHAT PRICE HUMAN LIFE?

CAN you ever put a price on human life?

I, along with most, would have said not; apparently the government disagree.

There can be no other explanation for their stubborn refusal to commit to retrofitting sprinkler systems in tower blocks such as our Seven Sisters.

We do have partial sprinkler systems in them, but they only cover the bin areas and rubbish chutes.

How many more tragedies such as Grenfell and similar fatal fires in Camberwell and Southampton will we have to suffer before government listen? ●●This image, titled Raindrops on roses, was submitted by Paul Fraser. Worryingly coroners in both the Camberwell and Southampton fires clearly recommended that sprinklers should be fitted in all such buildings as a matter of urgency.

The Camberwell blaze was in 2009, Southampton the following year, hence my concern that nothing seems to be getting done.

It hardly seems fair that it is us, the council and the borough’s residents, who will pick up the pieces if we suffer a similar fate to that which struck Grenfell.

The government don’t seem that concerned.

I think we can all guess why this would be the case? Coun Richard Farnell Leader of Rochdale council
