Factory visit teaches pupils recycling lesson
PUPILS visited a recycling business to learn how to transform discarded products into new ones.
Five members of the Year 7 council at Whitworth Community High School visited Anglo Recycling to help them understand their school topic of recycling and the environment.
The youngsters toured the Whitworth-based factory and learned how pieces of carpet could then be made into a new product.
Although both Alice Warrington, aged 11 and Elysia Wild, aged 12, had walked past the factory on Tong Lane many times, neither knew what the company did.
Alice said: “They explained how they take the offcuts of carpets that are normally thrown away and they recycle them to make a new product.”
Elysia added: “We were shown around the factory and saw the different machinery used to make felt and carpet.”
The pupils also aim to raise awareness among fellow students about the importance of recycling everything possible and minimising waste.
Simon Macaulay, chairman of Anglo Recycling which will celebrate its 80th year in business next year, said: “I was impressed by the young people, who had each made a personal commitment to improve their school by reducing litter around the site.
“One student mentioned that she had been shocked by Blue Planet 2 and the amount of polythene in the oceans.
“They were a real credit to their school, asking loads of intelligent and incisive questions.”
