Highfield go through to second semi

- BEN SIMMONDS

HIGHFIELD recorded their second win on the bounce to progress to the semi-final of Chris Shyne Memorial Trophy.

Wayne Whitlow’s visiting side knocked out Rochdalians with a tight 3-2 win, to reach their second semi-final of the season.

Andy Williams opened the scoring for Highfield on the half-hour mark, before Lewis Altimas immediately scored to double their advantage.

Just before the interval, Dalians pulled one back to make for an enthralling secondhalf.

Spectators had to wait till the 75th minute before they saw the next goal, as Highfield’s Jay Porter volleyed home from distance to extend their lead for the second time.

Rochdalians did pull a late consolation goal back but Highfield still ran out winners.

Whitlow commented on his side’s performance saying: “We are proving once again to be a very good cup team, making the semi-final in the Lancashire Cup and the Chris Shyne memorial cup.

“It should be a very significant week in the history of Highfield, come March when we play both of these matches.”

Elton and Walshaw also won 5-4 in the Chris Shyne memorial trophy this weekend, against Old Loom.

In the Newbold Tyres Premier Division Wardle extended the gap to eight points over second place, with a 6-0 win over Coppice United.

In the FJ Williams Trophy Quarter Finals AFC Kearsley progressed with a 4-0 win over Avenue, while MPG knocked out Free Trade Tavern.

Meanwhile, Cartshaft’s 7-2 win saw them knock out Wardleworth and Broadway Celtic finally crumbled at the hands of Chadderton.

In addition this week, the Rochdale and District Sunday Football League has announced that they hope to extend the league in the coming seasons.

The council hopes that their invitation will see a long-term rise in the involvement of amateur football in both the local and wider community.

Furthermore, the league would like to extend an invitation to any team, wishing to join any of their existing senior divisions.

The RDSFL council urge that any teams interested in joining any of the division mentioned, should contact them via email at rdsfl@hotmail.co.uk or call Andy Palombo on 07540 884796. Newbold Tyres Premier Division
