APENSIONER was left speechless after a kindhearted stranger paid his £49 shopping bill in Aldi.

Now Alan Young and wife Jean want to thank her from bottom of their hearts for providing a bright moment in what he said had been an awful year so far.

He said: “I can’t get over it. I’m 71 and you think you’ve experienced just about everything but it was just unbelievable.

“I have had such an awful year.

“I received an £18,000 council tax fine, got tonsillitis which at my age is quite serious, had my prostate removed then E.coli for five weeks,”

Alan and Jean, from Milnrow, were shopping in Aldi on Thursday morning, only a day after he had left hospital.

In a ‘mile-long’ queue, his card was declined as he had not yet received his state pension.

He asked the cashier to keep his shopping so he couple pop home, a fiveminute walk away, to find out what was going on.

When he returned to the store and asked if it could be kept one more day until his pension came through the cashier laughed.

She told him how a kind stranger had paid for his shopping.

Without leaving any contact details, the fellow shopper wished Alan a nice day.

“I just stood there like, a gormless idiot and thought she must be joking. You read about all this evil going on and this just feels unreal - it’s like floating on air,” Alan added.

Alan’s shopping consisted of a cooling mat for his dog, Penny, for the upcoming heatwave and a set of three onesies for his grandson, Adam.

His grandson was a happy miracle after his step-daughter, Alison, 37, was told she couldn’t have children.

But due to the infections, Alan has not been able to visit the new baby.

Alan moved to Rochdale from Leeds almost 45 years ago and finds the people there are so kind.

He and Jean want to tell the lady: “She made our day. “It was the perfect day. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
