CARERS will take centre stage during a week of celebrations to mark national Carers’ Week from 11-18 June.

Rochdale carers’ hub has organised a packed programme of events for the 25,000 carers across the borough.

Attractions include a cream tea morning at Heywood Market (10amnoon, Tuesday, June 12), a hanging basket session at Sandbrook Park (1pm3pm, Tuesday, June 12) and a coffee and chat session at Hare Hill Café, Littleborough (1pm3pm, Thursday, June 14).

Young carers can ‘strike it lucky’ at a tenpin bowling event at Strike Ten Bowling, Sandbrook Park, Rochdale, 7pm-9pm on Monday, June 11. The carers’ hub has teamed up with Link4Life to sportingly offer a range of free activity taster sessions, including walking netball and Zumba, throughout the week.

Staff will be on hand at the council’s Number One Riverside building and Rochdale Infirmary to offer information, advice and help about the excellent carers’ services provided locally.

Carers’ Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the fantastic job they do to support loved ones.

Coun Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult care, said: “This event is always a wonderful week and is the chance to say ‘thank you’ to carers for the selfless and dedicated work they do throughout the year. The number of carers across the borough continues to increase and we are proud of our work to support them. It promises to be another Carers’ Week to remember.”

Teresa Jennings, chief executive of N-Compass, who run the events for the council, said: “We have a fun packed and busy schedule for Carers’ Week and we are looking forward to engaging with existing and new adult and young carers in the borough. Helping Carers integrate back into the community is an important strand of our work, as eight in 10 carers tell us they are lonely and feel isolated. We will be highlighting the support available in helping carers to stay well, so they can continue to provide the much-needed care for their loved ones.”
