Player battles back – to take global sporting moment award

-

IT was one of the most inspirational moments in the Dale’s history.

Midfielder Joe Thompson made an emotional comeback after twice beating cancer by realising a childhood dream of playing at Wembley.

The 29-year-old midfielder came on a substitute during Rochdale’s FA Cup replay against Spurs at the national stadium.

It came 12 months after the 29-year-old midfielder was diagnosed with cancer for the second time.

But remarkably he was able to recover and return to the Rochdale side - and then play his part in the club’s incredible FA Cup run.

And it’s now been voted the Sporting Moment of the Month in a prestigious global competition.

Thompson was recognised for his bravery and resilience in the Laureus awards.

And to cap off an incredible few weeks Thompson went on to score the goal that secured Rochdale’s League One survival, in one of the stories of the football season.

Thompson got the winner in the 1-0 victory against Charlton Athletic, with the three points enough to help Rochdale to avoid the drop.

Rochdale-raised Thompson, a former St Cuthbert’s High School pupil, said: “Thank you so much to everyone for the incredible support which has helped me win the Laureus Sporting Moment public vote for May. I hope my story offered hope or a little inspiration to people out there. Being nominated for the Award was an honour but to win it is just incredible. This is for anyone out there who is fighting for something in their life. Never give up.”

Speaking after Rochdale’s great escape Thompson said: “It’s been a hard 12 months and my daughter has been my motivation. Thankfully I’ve got the goal and I’m over the moon.”
