Mayfield intent clear from start

- IAN KERSHAW

WITHIN a minute of this game starting Mayfield had signalled their intention and that was to win this game.

Ieaun Higgs showed his class as he stepped through a bemused defence for a brilliant individual try which he then converted to make it 6-0.

A good start was important, Walney are a quality side and are not top of the league for nothing but Mayfield paid their reputation no heed as theyplayed some of their best rugby of the season.

Their defence was superb with Mark Biggins and Joe muir working overtime but even they couldnt match the tackling machine that is Joe Schofield the way he defended was something else as he rocked the Walney attackers every time they carried the ball in.

The pace of the game was breath taking with both sides on top form. Mayfield pressed the Walney line with Callum Corchoran dictating the pace from acting half back.

Corchoran was next on the score sheet as he followed a John Marsland kick and touched down before the defenders could clear the ball. 10-0.

Mayfield were in complete control as they moved the ball about at will and Luke Hartley made the most of this as he tok a great ball from John Foy and crashed over in the corner to make it 14-0.

Tom Fitzgerald was next on the score sheet after good work from Rob Kershaw and Macauley Donnelly got him to the line and he used his strength to bust through three defenders, 18-0.

Walney began to get a foothold in the game and showed they are a team to be reckoned with, they were unlucky not to score and only Mayfield’s stoic defence kept them out.

The second half saw the vistors come into their own and they scored two converted tries and with the score at 18-12 they were threatening to come back and possibly take the two points.

Mayfield had other ideas though and Kershaw read the riot act to his team.

This had the desired effect and from the restart they upped the pace again and regained the edge Jackson Kelly and Corey Newsham were superb in this spell.

Joe Schofield capped a great performance by grabbing a try after a speculative ball from Donnelly Marsland converted, 24-12.

John Foy rounded off the scoring as he held off his opposite number to touchdown in the corner, Marsland again added the two.

The 30-12 scoreline reflected the game with Mayfield being the best side by a margin.

Newsham, Kelly, Muir and Rush all had good games but Joe Schofield took the MOM after an all action performance.
