ROCHDALE Music Service’s youth brand band hit top marks and top notes at the annual Saddleworth band contest.

The youth band entered 11 contests, coming first in Friezland and Lees and Springfield and second in Dobcross, Greenfield and Scouthead and Austerlands.

Their fantastic results in each of their entries meant that they were named overall winners of the youth contest.

They were also the winners of the Best Youth Band Deportment category at Lees and Springhead, which is awarded for the exquisiteness of their marching and standing during performance.

Coun Kieran Heakin, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “What an achievement for the band. It is testament to the hard work of our music service and just shows the great things young people can achieve with them.”

Wardle Academy Youth Band – current European brass band champions also secured a number of wins during the contests, which featured a number of brass bands from the borough of Rochdale.

The contest takes place every year on Whit Friday and is a hugely popular event, growing year on year. Band entries into the competition are of a high standard and are marked by judges.

The band also pitted against the adult bands finishing a very impressive 26th out of 118 in the overall rankings of the event.
