Street dancers hop to it and claim major honours

-

A STREET dance troupe was among the winners at a national competition.

Several members of Whitehall Street-based JD Dance Club took the honours at the UK Hip Hop dance contest in Southport - and one of fathers even bagged second spot in the dad dancing contest.

Isla Tucker won the seven-year-old section and then went on to win the combined age section against dancers as old as 16 years. Katy Robinson also won the under 14’s section.

The club also swept the board in the seven-year-old duo section.

Dance teacher David Kirby said: “JD Dance now have 2 Street Dance teams: Under 10’s Team Flawless Graffiti and Over 14’s team Misguided. The younger team coming 2nd place at competitions and the older team winning their group and progressing from beginners to intermediate.

“As well as the teams around 40 dancers have been attending Hip Hop UK competitions competing in solo/duo/ quad dance routines and bringing home lots of trophies and medals.

“As each competition passes all the children and teens have grown in confidence cheering each other on and supporting those that on occasion do not make it into a final.

“One of the Dads decided to impulsively jump on the floor in the dad dancing freestyle section and came 2nd against other dads that had clearly been practicing their dad dance moves for weeks. We have more competitions planned for the year ahead and more and more dancers looking to join our teams.

“All our dancers look forward to bringing home bigger and better trophies and working towards bigger and better competitions.”
