Great-gran cancer nurse is still caring for patients at 80

Rochdale Observer - - NOSTALGIA -

IRENE Budd has watched The Christie grow from a ‘cottage hospital’ to a world leader in treating cancer.

The nurse is now 80 – and is still caring for patients. Thousands have passed through her hands, and Irene, who works every Friday on the Integrated Procedures Unit, says she has no intention of stopping any time soon.

The great-grandmother, who lives in Audenshaw with her husband Wilfrid, was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to nursing in 2014 and has now been nominated for another top award for her incredible dedication to the NHS.

Irene first began working at The Christie in 1979 as a radiotherapy nurse on Ward 1.

“It was like a cottage hospital when I first came here,” she said.

“I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the age of 15. It was just something in me, I wanted to care for other people.

“My husband said I would never do it because I’m too soft but I showed him and I’m still here doing it.”

In 2000, Irene decided it was time to retire, but her retirement was short-lived and within months she was back working part-time at the Withington hospital.

The mother-of-three, who is treasurer of a local history society and loves going for walks with her two dogs, added: “Nursing has changed a lot over the past 40 years – treatments and technology have advanced and there are more options available to patients.

“I wouldn’t change it for the world and will not be putting a time limit on how long I will continue nursing, I just live for each day.”

Irene has been nominated for the Kate Granger Awards for Compassionate Care.

The awards were launched in memory of Dr Kate Granger, the founder of the globally recognised #hellomynameis campaign to encourage all health and care staff to deliver care with compassion, following her death in July 2016.

The award ceremony takes place at the NHS England Health and Care Innovation Expo at Manchester Central.

Christie chief nurse Jackie Bird said: “We are thrilled that Irene has been nominated for a Kate Granger award.

“It is testament to the care and compassion she has shown during so many years working here at The Christie.”
