Absent minister hits out at mayor with ‘neglect’ claim

Rochdale Observer - - NOSTALGIA -

IT was a historic day as northern leaders, businesses and voluntary groups gathered to speak with ‘one voice’ about the future of the region – but there was a glaring absence.

Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry is alleged to have snubbed his invite to the Convention of the North.

Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, said he had personally texted Mr Berry about the event - but never received a reply.

When later asked by the M.E.N. why he didn’t reply, or attend the Convention of the North, Mr Berry did not answer, instead accusing Mr Burnham of ‘neglecting the North’ during his time in government.

Mr Berry added: “Andy Burnham talks about cross-party support for transport, but during his time in government he failed to deliver.

“Now he snipes, backbites and criticises the very body that he is a member of, Transport for the North.”
