Patched-up Boro make good fist of it

- HARRY HANSON

IT was a patched up squad which travelled to Tameside with several players missing through injury while a number of the club’s younger representatives had taken off to university for the start of the academic year.

Those who turned out for Boro produced a creditable performance, finishing just one point behind the host team.

The match commenced with Aldwinians establishing control while Boro were still finding their feet.

However, the visitors got to grips with their newlook side and surged ahead on eight minutes with a well taken penalty by Nathan Coop.

That was followed by a great tackle from Ted Chadwick and a brilliant distance kick to

touch by captain Andy Walton.

Scrum Half Chris Kolbuck produced a great tackle which was soon followed with a good

break by prop forward Mark Murgatroyd, the move finishing with the game’s opening try by Chadwick, converted by Coop, to put Boro 10 points ahead.

Clearly on the front foot at that stage, Boro increased their advantage when centre threequarter Adam Wayne crossed the tryline for their second try, again converted by Coop.

Leading 17-0 after half an hour, the signs looked promising for Boro in their pursuit of a second away win of the campaign.

Unfortunately for the visitors, just before half time the host team winger showed his pace and gave his side an unconverted try for their first

points of the afternoon, making the half time score 17-5 in Boro’s favour.

The second half commenced with another strong break by Murgatroyd and it looked like it would be a continuation of the first half for Boro.

However, it was not to be.

A breakaway try, converted by the host team, brought them within five points of Boro’s score, and that was soon followed with a converted penalty, reducing Boro’s advantage to just two points.

Another Aldwinians breakaway produce yet

another converted try as they took the lead for the first time in the match at 25-17.

After withstanding further pressure from the home side, Boro came up with a fine individual break themselves courtesy of Jack Whittles, who beat player after player to run in Boro’s third converted try under the posts to signal the end of the game of two halves and one which dramatically changed for Boro.

For his overall 100 per cent effort, including Boro’s opening try, the Man of the Match was awarded to No7, Ted Chadwick.
