Gas pipe replacement work is under way

Rochdale Observer - - NOSTALGIA -

WORK to upgrade the town’s Victorian-era gas pipes has begun.

Engineers from Cadent started their work on Saturday to renew 120 metres of pipe under Halifax Road.

Cadent will be replacing the existing cast iron pipe with a modern, durable plastic alternative, which will keep gas flowing locally for many generations.

They say that there should be no disruption to nearby gas supplies for the planned 20-day works.

As the pipe is directly under the road surface, traffic lights will manage the flow of vehicles around the work area.

Craig Horrocks, who leads Cadent’s gas mains replacement programme in the North West, said: “Dating to 1900, this pipe is showing the signs of its age and we need to replace it.”

Letters have been sent to every property along the work area – from near Red Lane to near Clayton Street – to explain what’s happening and why.

Craig added: “We know our work will cause local traffic disruption, but hope people understand this is essential work to maintain a safe and reliable supply well into the future.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this work.”
