Ball raises vi­tal funds

THOU­SANDS of pounds are ex­pected to have been raised for char­ity as Denise Welch wowed guests at her an­nual win­ter ball with a spec­tac­u­lar East­ern Prom­ise theme.

The evening, hosted by TV pre­sen­ter Kate Thorn­ton, raised funds for Rochdale char­ity The GEM Ap­peal, which funds re­search into ge­netic dis­or­ders.

While an ex­act fig­ure has not been con­firmed yet, the GEM ap­peal ex­pect thou­sands to have been raised in what is their big­gest fundraiser of the year.

For­mer Coro­na­tion Street star Denise de­liv­ered a sparkling evening fea­tur­ing dragons and Geishas at the Prin­ci­pal Ho­tel in Manch­ester.

Wendy Mills, a fundraiser and trustee with the GEM ap­peal, said: “We don’t know the to­tal raised yet as there’s the re­sults of the auc­tion and ev­ery­thing to come in but we think it’ll be thou­sands.

“This is our big­gest fundraiser of the year – all thanks to Denise.”

Natasha Brown of Brown’s cakes, Rochdale, cre­ated an amaz­ing three­tier Ori­en­tal-in­spired cake fea­tur­ing a dragon and has pre­vi­ously cre­ated themed cakes for many GEM Ap­peal events.

Steve Jack­son, man­ag­ing di­rec­tor of Rochdale firm JF Freight, was also present as the firm had sup­ported the evening.

The GEM ap­peal’s fi­nal fundraiser of the year will be a fes­tive Af­ter­noon Tea at the Clock Tower Restau­rant in Rochdale Town Hall on Satur­day, De­cem­ber 8 be­tween 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
