‘Pioneer’ John opens charity department store

-

AN actor who played the role of one of the original Rochdale Pioneers had the honour of opening a charity department store given space rent-free by the Co-op.

John Henshaw cut the ribbon on Monday at the Rochdale Exchange shopping centre to bring the Emmaus store to life.

The charity works to tackle homelessness and social exclusion, and about 60 vulnerable people will be given jobs at the 50,000 sq ft store – helping provide them with the skills, training and qualifications needed to integrate back into society.

In 2012, Manchesterborn Mr Henshaw played John Holt in movie The Rochdale Pioneers, which told the story of the foundation of the Co-operative movement.

To get involved with Emmaus or donate an item, please call 0330 058 4264 or visit the new department store at Rochdale Exchange Centre, 50A Market Way.
