A contemporary twist on classical Indian sounds
TALVIN Singh is an accomplished and highly celebrated tabla player, electronic musician, music theorist, record producer and DJ.
As a solo artist, he is perhaps best known as the father of modern Asian Underground music, creating the bridge between Indian and electronic music.
Drawing Inspiration from the classical Indian arts, he sculpts a unique sonic landscape.
He has taken the Tabla to the cutting edge with his sonic creations, demystifying Indian classical music, and inspiring a whole new generation of musicians and producers of contemporary music in India and the south Asian diaspora worldwide.
Talvin Singh has worked and collaborated with a very diverse range of artists, including, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sun Ra, the late Ustad Sultan Khan, Terry Riley, John Martyn, Yoko Ono, Björk, David Sylvian and Madonna.
His debut album, OK, achieved huge acclaim and won the Mercury Music Prize in 1999.
He has also been honoured with the South Bank Prize for popular music and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for Services to Music.
He also has pursued many artistic ventures parallel to and in conjunction with his music career, including creating the seminal London club ANOKHA, performing at the Tate Gallery in London, creating a sound installation at the Frith Street Gallery in London and composing music for various experimental dance, theatre and film projects.
In 1990 Talvin Singh conceived the Tablatronic, a hybrid electronic/ analog tabla which uses an internal microphone system.
Appearing alongside Talvin Singh will be Jason Singh, musician, composer, and sound artist, known predominately for his work as a vocal sculptor and beatboxer.
As well as being a solo artist and performer, Jason Singh also collaborates with a diverse range of organisations and artists, including; BBC, National Trust, SONOS, BFI, V&A Museum, Southbank Centre, Jaipur Literature Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Serious, Nitin Sawhney, Rokia Traore, Sebastian Rochford, Leafcutter John, Tim Exile and Arun Ghosh.
His vocal creations move through music, sound art, live performance, television, dance, poetry, theatre and film.
