A con­tem­po­rary twist on clas­si­cal In­dian sounds


TALVIN Singh is an ac­com­plished and highly cel­e­brated tabla player, elec­tronic mu­si­cian, mu­sic the­o­rist, record pro­ducer and DJ.

As a solo artist, he is per­haps best known as the fa­ther of modern Asian Un­der­ground mu­sic, cre­at­ing the bridge be­tween In­dian and elec­tronic mu­sic.

Draw­ing In­spi­ra­tion from the clas­si­cal In­dian arts, he sculpts a unique sonic land­scape.

He has taken the Tabla to the cut­ting edge with his sonic cre­ations, de­mys­ti­fy­ing In­dian clas­si­cal mu­sic, and in­spir­ing a whole new gen­er­a­tion of mu­si­cians and pro­duc­ers of con­tem­po­rary mu­sic in In­dia and the south Asian di­as­pora world­wide.

Talvin Singh has worked and col­lab­o­rated with a very di­verse range of artists, in­clud­ing, Siouxsie and the Ban­shees, Sun Ra, the late Us­tad Sul­tan Khan, Terry Ri­ley, John Mar­tyn, Yoko Ono, Björk, David Syl­vian and Madonna.

His de­but al­bum, OK, achieved huge ac­claim and won the Mer­cury Mu­sic Prize in 1999.

He has also been hon­oured with the South Bank Prize for pop­u­lar mu­sic and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for Ser­vices to Mu­sic.

He also has pur­sued many artis­tic ven­tures par­al­lel to and in con­junc­tion with his mu­sic ca­reer, in­clud­ing cre­at­ing the sem­i­nal Lon­don club ANOKHA, per­form­ing at the Tate Gallery in Lon­don, cre­at­ing a sound in­stal­la­tion at the Frith Street Gallery in Lon­don and com­pos­ing mu­sic for var­i­ous ex­per­i­men­tal dance, the­atre and film projects.

In 1990 Talvin Singh con­ceived the Tab­la­tronic, a hy­brid elec­tronic/ ana­log tabla which uses an in­ter­nal mi­cro­phone sys­tem.

Ap­pear­ing along­side Talvin Singh will be Ja­son Singh, mu­si­cian, com­poser, and sound artist, known pre­dom­i­nately for his work as a vo­cal sculp­tor and beat­boxer.

As well as be­ing a solo artist and per­former, Ja­son Singh also col­lab­o­rates with a di­verse range of or­gan­i­sa­tions and artists, in­clud­ing; BBC, Na­tional Trust, SONOS, BFI, V&A Mu­seum, South­bank Cen­tre, Jaipur Lit­er­a­ture Fes­ti­val, Glas­ton­bury Fes­ti­val, Se­ri­ous, Nitin Sawh­ney, Rokia Traore, Se­bas­tian Rochford, Leaf­cut­ter John, Tim Ex­ile and Arun Ghosh.

His vo­cal cre­ations move through mu­sic, sound art, live per­for­mance, tele­vi­sion, dance, po­etry, the­atre and film.
