Blasts rip through air as yard is hit by blaze
FIREBALL-LIKE flames erupted into the air as a blaze ripped through a yard in Royton.
Incredible pictures from the scene on Meek Street also showed huge explosions coming from the fire.
Firefighters were called to C&C Vehicle Services Ltd in the early hours of Sunday morning to reports of a vehicle fire.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said that a van and four articulated lorries were involved in the blaze.
The glare from the flames lit up the area around it, with thick black smoke billowing into the air.
Loud bangs caused by the explosions were also heard nearby.
It is not yet clear how the fire started, however police were called to the scene.
Film footage, recorded by Krisztián Bata, also shows fire crews trying to put out the flames using hose jets.
Images taken on Monday of the aftermath show a number of burnt out vehicles behind the fence of the accident repair specialists’ compound.
They are surrounded by scorched rubble and debris, blackened from the smoke.
A spokesman for GMFRS said: “We were called at 4.20am on Sunday morning to reports of a vehicle fire on Meek Street.
“We sent four engines from Oldham, Hollins, Chadderton and Rochdale to the scene along with the command support unit.
“The fire involved a van and four articulated lorries.
“We were on scene for two hours 15 minutes.
“Police were also in attendance.”
