Joan relives her Red Cross youth
A FORMER British Red Cross worker proudly wore her old uniform and medals at a care home charity event.
Joan Williams, who served with the society in her younger days, shared her stories and experiences as Half Acre House in Rochdale celebrated Dignity Action Day.
Families and friends were invited along for a cup of tea and a chat, with many bringing raffle prizes.
Anita Lewis, owner of Half Acre House, said residents and staff were also busy baking cakes in the days leading up to the event.
She said: “Joan entered into the spirit of things and her son discovered her Red Cross uniform and medals she had won many years ago. They were still in the attic at home.
“She proudly wore them on the day and played her part with other residents, sharing her stories and memories while also encouraging the sale of cakes, raffle tickets and a special ‘name the bear’ game.
“The afternoon was full of chatter with children and adults interacting, which is just what the residents love to do.
“Children and families are an intricate part of the dignified lifestyle that residents enjoy at Half Acre, with nursery children, primary and college students often involved in projects and visits to the home.”
The event raised more than £60 and follows on from the success of Australia day.
Anita said the care home will also celebrate Chinese New Year with food, music and the opportunity to handle a collection of Chinese memorabilia. ●●Joan Williams proudly wearing her old British Red Cross uniform at Half Acre House and memorabilia from her days in the organisation (right)
