ASPEEDING driver who killed his friend tried to blame the victim’s brother after he ploughed into a parked van.

Dylan Lipinski, 28, of Rochdale, has been jailed after admitting causing the death of 30-year-old dad Carl Service, during a horror crash in Cheetham Hill.

Residents nearby heard a ‘huge bang’ after Lipinski lost control and crashed into a van on Smedley Lane, at about 7.40pm on May 30.

Mr Service, from Blackley, had been sat in the back of the VW Jetta, and brother Jamie was also in the car sat in the front.

Carl Service was thrown from the car.

After the crash, Lipinski tried to get help from a nearby pub.

“I need help, there’s been a crash, my mate’s dying,” he said.

The pub manager noticed he had blood on his head, and said he appeared to be drunk.

As people from the pub went to help, Lipinski started to run away and a police officer followed and handcuffed him.

He told police he had been a passenger in the car, and claimed that Mr Service’s brother had been the driver.

Carl Service, a ‘kind’ and ‘caring’ father to three-year-old Myla and one-year-old Jaxx, died about an hour-and-a-half after the crash.

Now Lipinski has been jailed for eight years and eight months, following a hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

After the crash, officers discovered that Lipinski was disqualified from driving.

He was initially taken to hospital, and failed to provide a sample of blood.

An investigation by police confirmed that Lipinski was the driver of the VW Jetta.

The crash happened on a bend which has a 20mph limit. Officers found that the crash happened because the car was going too fast for the bend.

It was estimated that Lipinski was travelling at more than 50mph prior to the crash.

Carl Service’s partner Rachel Dignam previously spoke of her heartbreak, describing his death as a ‘nightmare’.

She said: “I received a phone call on the night (of the crash) to say he had been in an accident.

“They did everything they could to save his life. “It’s like a bad dream.” Mr Service, who worked as a delivery driver, had also be en studying a course in ethical hacking and cybersecurity at UCEN Manchester in Openshaw.

Ms Dignam, paying tribute to her partner of eight years, said: “He was kind, caring and hardworking.

“He loved his children, he was family orientated.”

Flowers and balloons were left at the scene of the crash in tribute to Mr Service.

One note said: “A part of me will be missing forever. Love you always, your Rach”.

Another read: “We will forever miss you daddy. But will always remember you. Simply the best, Myla and Jaxx.”

One tribute said: “Carl, R.I.P. Gonna miss your cheeky smile. Life won’t be the same.”

Lipinski, of Gale Court, Rochdale, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen, failing to stop after an accident and driving without insurance.

He was also banned from driving for nine years.

After the hearing, Sergeant Andrew Page, of GMP’S Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a completely reckless and irresponsible act which resulted in the death of a man.

“Our thoughts remain with Carl’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“Lipinski is a selfish individual who didn’t give a thought to the danger his actions posed to the passengers in his car, other road users and members of the public.

“I hope today’s sentencing gives Lipinski the time he needs to reflect on the amount of devastation and hurt his selfish actions have caused and sends a clear message to anyone who thinks it is acceptable to act in such a manner, that these actions can have serious consequences.”

We’re actually without pets at the moment, for the first time in a number of years. We had two cats, Claude and Audrey, who were brother and sister, but we lost Claude three years ago and had to put Audrey to sleep earlier this year.

You really notice it – those moments when they’ll curl up with you on the sofa purring. They just make the house a warmer place. with my partner, Mark, and we’ve had a shared grief. We have those little memories of Audrey, and we love looking through photographs, even though it’s upsetting. I think it’s nice to look back and remember. Some have found work an escape from the pandemic, while others have found it much more difficult - where do you stand? It’s been a positive for me. When we first locked-down, nobody knew anything, we were all thinking [it would be] three or four weeks and it just snowballed, so it was such a blessing that we were back in June.

Even then, there was that fear we could be shut down again at any moment, like if there was an outbreak at work. Thankfully there wasn’t, and it was a chance to see people and feel a small semblance of normality.

Reading and cooking. I’m by no means a fantastic chef, but I really enjoy cooking and I love food. Last year, we were trying to limit our trips to the supermarket, which made us properly plan our meals. We had so many gorgeous recipe books that we hadn’t used, so we just went though them, saying, ‘Let’s try this’. I really enjoyed it – it made me feel calm and content.
