How to cut your child’s risk from pollution

-

Air pollution is especially dangerous for children as their bodies are still developing 12 times higher inside a car than outside because vehicles on the road can be travelling in a stream of pollution emitted by other vehicles.

The campaign’s experiment comparing travel modes also showed people walking or cycling the same route can be exposed to less air pollution than those in a vehicle.

“That’s a good reason to leave the car at home, cutting children’s exposure to bad air as well as overall emissions,” explains Jenny.

I love learning the origins of the many, often batty, phrases I use far too frequently, such as to turn a blind eye, crying crocodile tears, and cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Watching Jeremy Clarkson’s new programme about starting a farm was the first time I realised “moving onto pastures new” came from sheep who had finished all the grass in the field and had to move on in order to survive. I now like the phrase even more than I did before.

I also learned how the female sheep get their coloured markings on their backs, but I will let you find that bit of trivia out for yourselves.

One of my favourite sayings has to be “the devil is in the detail”. This phrase doesn’t have a particularly exciting or even a confirmed back story, only that it was originally known as God is in the detail, meaning that attention paid to the small details will bring big rewards, which is how I use it because it’s so true, especially in my line of work.

In styling, it is the details that make an outfit work wonderfully and elevate ordinary clothes to look spectacular.

This isn’t about accessories, the details in fashion are more than adornments, it is about balance and proportion, the length of a trouser, the cut of a shirt.

There is an element of flattery involved. The details can enhance or detract where necessary, but I don’t believe fashion should be dictatorial.

Don’t get me started on how vertical stripes are slimming, or worse, putting women’s body shapes into fruit and veg themed categories: apple, pear and onion.

The details are how you personalise an outfit, make it your own, make it work on your body shape, for your taste and your lifestyle.

My favourite details are: folding back your cuffs; choosing to half tuck your shirt in; adding red lipstick to an otherwise masculine outfit; long earrings with swept up hair; a bag that is hand held; rolling up your trousers to reveal tanned ankles; wearing socks with sandals (it’s no longer a faux pax), and layered necklaces with sentimental charms.

The devil really is in the detail, she should know, she wears Prada.
