Home crowd offers Tate taste of big time

- RUGBY LEAGUE JOSH MCALLISTER

WILL Tate says he enjoyed his first time in front of a home crowd against London Skolars as the youngster featured for Rochdale Hornets on loan.

The 19-year-old linked up with Matt Calland’s side from Super League outfit Hull Kingston Rovers last week alongside forward Tom Whur, and both featured in the recent 22-4 victory over the Skolars.

It was the first time the two youngsters have played in front of a home crowd, with a strong 1,171 in attendance on Sunday at the Crown Oil Arena.

Tate made his Super League debut for the Robins last year and played four times in the 2020 season, scoring his first try in the topflight against Huddersfield Giants.

He said: “It was my first time playing in front of a home crowd of any kind really, so it was great to get some support and the stadium had a really positive feel to it.

“I’ve always known of Rochdale as a town because I support

Scunthorpe United and have watched them play against Rochdale a lot over the years!

“I really enjoyed being out there. The weather probably dictated a lot of the game in the end, but we backed up our mistakes with some solid defence and managed to grind out the win.”

Hornets make the 386 round-trip this Saturday to Stebonheath Park to face bottom of the table West Wales Raiders on Saturday, while Rochdale sit sixth following their recent victory.

“I’m really excited to get out and play as much as I can,” said Tate, who has one week remaining on his initial two-week loan.

“Everyone has had limited game time over the last 18 months and I’m no different. I’m looking forward to improving my game and help this club get some wins while I’m here.

“West Wales will be a tough game after a long journey, but you forget all that once you’re playing. It’s our job to make sure the trip home is a nice one!”

Hornets return to the Crown Oil Arena on Saturday, July 25, to face Workington Town in League 1.
