ACOP nicknamed ‘John Wayne’ got his man - making an arrest after a dangerous 110mph police chase which lasted more than 30 minutes across a town.

Greater Manchester Police said the constable was ‘covertly’ following a speeding car in Heywood.

The car, a white Toyota, subsequently failed to stop when instructed, the force said.

That resulted in a pursuit which lasted 30 minutes.

Police said the car, which hasn’t been identified, reached speeds of up to 110mph, even in 30mph zones, from Heywood through Rochdale town centre.

It was finally abandoned near to a church on Rhodes

Street in Rochdale.

The force said a suspect got out and attempted to run away, but was chased by the officer, named only as PC Cross, and arrested.

No further details have been revealed, but the pursuit happened last Thursday.

No reported.

Images posted on the GMP Rochdale Facebook page appear to show the car being pursued crashed into a parked car on the street, which is off Halifax Road.

The incident was detailed on the police division’s Facebook page.

A post read: “PC ‘John Wayne’ Cross had an eventful evening last Thursday.

“After covertly following a speeding vehicle through Heywood and it failing to stop for police, a 30 minute chase through Rochdale occurred, reaching speeds of up to 110mph in a 30mph. The car was abandoned on Rhodes Street where the driver was injuries were chased on foot and arrested. Well done PC Cross!”

The tongue-in-cheek post is now being shared widely on Facebook, with police being praised.

It’s understood the police helicopter was scrambled as the pursuit played out.

No further details about the suspect arrested have been revealed.
