HEBRON PENTECOSTAL

EVER wonder what Advent is and why many Christians observe it?

Every year Advent invites us to prepare our hearts once more for the gift; the gift that seemingly is too good to be true but is, in fact, miraculously and joyously true!

And, each year, we have the opportunity to say yes to that invitation, to prepare our hearts for the miracle of Immanuel, “God with us.”

The word advent comes from the Latin word adventus and simply means “coming” or “arrival.”

Advent begins each year on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which is the Sunday closest to November 30.

It is a season in which Christians around the world celebrate the First Advent, Jesus’ birth and also anticipate the Second Advent, Christ’s return.

Although the themes of Advent sometimes vary, those most commonly observed during the four weeks of Advent are hope, peace, joy and love. What’s on this week: Sunday, 11am, is the Main Service at Hebron, with Sunday school during the service and café open after the morning service. 1pm is the Nepalese service.

Monday, 9.30am, is the ‘Peek a Book’ Parents, Carers, Baby & Toddlers Group.

Tuesday/wednesday are Home groups at various locations in Rochdale.

Thursday, 7am, is the early morning prayer meeting.

Friday, 5pm-6.30pm, is Power Pack Kids Club, 7pm is Youth Group and 8pm is the prayer meeting at Hebron.

For more information on our events or if you want to know more about Hebron, please visit our website at www.hebron pentecostal church.co.uk or email info@ hebronrochdale.co.uk

ST ANDREW’S, DEARNLEY

WE have been partnered with St Thomas’s, Newhey and St James’s, Milnrow, in the Manchester Diocese’s new Mission initiative and our first link-up with those parishes and their vicar, the Rev Janet Pitman, involves the forthcoming Advent Course, which starts on Wednesday, December 1.

Each week in the run-up to Christmas the Advent Course will be held at St Andrew’s on Wednesdays at 2pm and at St Thomas’s, Newhey on Thursdays at 7pm.

The content will be the same each week at the two venues, the idea being that if the St Andrew’s meeting is not convenient on any particular week you can always go to the St Thomas’s course the following evening, or vice-versa.

In other words, each week you will have the choice of Wednesday or Thursday to attend that week’s Advent content, which will be led by four ‘teachers’; the Rev Rachel Battershell (vicar of St Andrew’s), the Rev Janet Pitman (vicar of St

Thomas’s and St James’s), the Rev Canon Roger Hill, a retired priest who is part of the St Andrew’s ministry team and Wendy Foote, a Lay Reader Emeritus at St Andrew’s.

Last night, Friday, we had Wardle Anderson Brass in church for our annual Big Band Night, which will kick-start for us the build-up to St Andrew’s Day on Tuesday, November 30.

Christians and Scots across the world will be celebrating St Andrew’s Day on Tuesday, an extremely special day in the history of Christianity in Dearnley and the sowing of the St Andrew’s seed and the first services in our beautiful church when it was consecrated and opened in 1895.

Generations of local people have been baptised, confirmed, married and buried there, leaving a legacy that hands down a huge responsibility on their descendants to keep and to maintain St Andrew’s as a beacon of faith and pastoral care in this community.

We must not, we will not let them down and just as Remembrance Day reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many local lads so that future generations of Dearnley folk could enjoy better lives, so too does St Andrew’s Day remind us of what our forefathers and mothers did to help to make their local church the vibrant, active institution it is today.

Come Tuesday, a happy St Andrew’s Day to everyone!

Our next Family Service, ideal for those with young children and specifically designed for the little ones, is on the second Sunday in December at 4pm.

It will be all about the birth of the baby Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas.

Not one to be missed if you wish your children to know there’s more to Christmas than Santa, pressies and turkey dinners.

Bible Study continues on Mondays at 2pm and choir practice on Wednesdays at 7.15pm.

We are now taking donations for the

Foodbank, specifics required are cereals, long-life milk and jams and Christmas selection boxes for children who otherwise wouldn’t get them.
