ABUSINESS owner and cancer survivor has completed a 10k walk to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Malcolm Cudworth, who owns textile business Cudworth of Norden, in Rochdale, took part in this year’s Cancer Research UK 10km ‘Shine Night Walk’ in Manchester alongside son Greg and daughter-in-law Joanne supported by sister Fiona.

The trio have so far raised £1,400 for the charity fighting to cure cancer after taking part in the walk which began and ended in Castlefield Bowl in Manchester early this month.

Diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2020 Malcolm, 69, made a full recovery but has now recently been diagnosed with a separate case of prostate cancer.

He said: “There were hundreds of people there and it’s a atmosphere.

“As you’re doing the walk you’re seeing plenty of sights, you go past the Palace Theatre and Bridgewater Hall – it’s a slightly different route to last year.

“You take your time and about half way round there’s a water station. It’s a pleasant two and half hours and you get cars tooting their horns in support.”

Malcolm had his bowel cancer diagnosis confirmed three days before Christmas last year and had a seven-hour operation in February followed by chemotherapy treatment.

As well as raising money Malcolm hopes taking part in the walk will help raise awareness of bowel cancer.

“There are advances being made. You just want to raise money and help things along as much as you can,” he said.

“You should know your own body and know when really good things aren’t right. Perhaps if I’d acted a bit quicker It might have been even less of a problem. I got things moving in time and my recovery’s been good.

“You’ve got grandchildren and you want to be around to see them grow and develop as much as you can. You’ve got to adopt a positive mental attitude.”

Malcolm added that he wanted to thank the healthcare staff for their work over the past year.

He said: “I was blown away by the professionalism, care and competence of everything. I’m so grateful and fortunate for what they’ve been able to do for me.

“For me personally where there’s so much negativity around I think the NHS does a marvellous job. I think they get stuck in and do a great job.”
