●●A POPULAR pub in Rochdale is due to finally reopen after undergoing major six figure refurb. The Hornet reopened its doors ahead of the busy Christmas period on Friday last week and as part of their new menu, children can eat for just a pound (Nov 11):

Yvette Allardyce: Had a meal with friends on the opening night last week was really nice, nice refurb and staff were spot on. Mark Batty: Just wondering if I can order 3 kids meals for 3 quid. Should be enough to fill me up Kellie Cordner: Hope you’ve still got them chicken wings on menu? Looking forward to our visit weekend x

●●THE Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre closed in 2020 and has been left empty with products strewn throughout. Urban explorer Jake (Exploring With Jake) paid the once bustling venue a visit and took some brilliant photos (Nov 11):

Kaiyum Ar Raheem: The best teenage Saturdays were spent roaming around Wheathsheaf Centre. It feels so sad to see it in such condition. Online and big firms like Amazon are going to totally kill off retail. Worse is yet to come. Eva Williams Moulton: Get a huge Primark in there be fab for Rochdale Jen Houlihan: Shame how it ended up, look what we have now, a few shops on a little walk that’s never seen bustling. Me, I go to Bury, Rochdale is dead for shopping. Sonja Brine: Have we no millionaires who care about the Children of our town. Massive entertainment centre for roller/ice skating skateboarding littles soft play ? Whatever keeps them safe and active..it would fit in sooo well with the existing area.. Stephen Lees: When the Wheatsheaf was opened in the early nineties no one could have foreseen the internet or the impact internet shopping would have on the high street. The huge cost benefits to business by trading online is why some retailers are now online only. Things have changed forever and there is no going back. Mark Walsh: I remember meeting the late great Dame Barbara Windsor here must have been circa 1992 got a signed photo of her a lovely lady

●●PEOPLE in Rochdale have been found to have more of a Lancashire accent, according to sociolinguists at Manchester Metropolitan University. They have published the findings of three years of research into how people speak across the region. It found residents of boroughs such as Rochdale, Bury, Bolton, and Oldham are more likely to have a ‘Lancashire’ accent (Nov 15):

Pam Hall: I adore some accents and Lancashire, Yorkshire and Geordie are my favourites. I love those men on telly who do trips with cars all over the country and world it seems. Could listen to them all day. Their accents are as warm and loving as a hot water bottle. Jahn Khan: Rochdale has always been Lancashire, hence Lancashire accent Gemma Lee: I can still have the accent just not the address Marc Andrew Blakey: Bury, Bolton, rochdale and Oldham are Lancashire towns that’s probably why. Louise Sheridan: My other half’s from Ashton, says I talk posh..i’m from Stockport lol Moz Kingston: We have a Lancashire accent because we live in a place that was in Lancashire for far longer than it wasn’t.

Ethan Brierley’s our young lad who’s class

His arsenal’s got every pass It’s sad if he goes But everyone knows We’d pick up some much-needed brass!

But classy guys don’t often stay

And good luck if he’s on his way As cream of our crop He’ll rise to the top And could play for Arsenal one day! Ian Aitchison Stonehill Road Rooley Moor Rochdale
