WORK is underway to transform a brownfield site in Castleton into a 100plus homes development.

Hive Homes, Homes England, Rochdale Borough Council and contractors Seddon have broken ground on the project which will transform the former site of the iconic Castleton Moor Mill in Rochdale.

Built on brownfield land, the development will offer three and four bedroom open-market homes and will be called Weavers Fold, a name which pays tribute to the area’s old cotton mill industry.

Hive said the homes will also feature a private garden, an electric vehicle charging point and a ‘contemporary specification’.

Councillor Daniel Meredith, cabinet member for highways and housing, and ward councillors Billy Sheerin and Aisling-blaise Gallagher joined the developer Hive Homes, construction contractors Seddon and Homes England to mark the occasion.

“This development will mark a welcome addition to the range of housing available in Castleton and will add to the vibrancy of the area,” said Cllr Meredith at the event.

“It realises our first priority of building on brownfield sites as the primary way to offer new housing in the borough.

“We have similar aspirations for Heywood with new homes in the pipeline that I hope will be constructed in the near future.”

Prior to starting the build Hive said they undertook an archaeological dig after consulting with the Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service and said while they didn’t find anything of historical interest – it was a pleasure to fully research the land.

Ed Milner, Managing Director of Hive Homes, said: “It’s a real pleasure to bring these much needed, high-quality homes to the area of Castleton in Rochdale.

“We appreciate the support that Rochdale Council and members of the community have given us for this development, and we hope that the proposed transfer of a third of the Site to the Council, for a new Primary School, will be well received by the community too.”

Jeff Hook, Construction Director for Seddon said: “We’re delighted to be working with Hive Homes again and happy to continue creating new family homes in Rochdale.

“The contemporary and energy-efficient standards of these homes show the forward-thinking nature of the partnership as we strive to deliver homes that meet the demands of the local community.

“We’re confident these 100+ new homes will be a welcome addition to the surrounding area.”
