AHOSPICE has named its 28th annual Man of Rochdale as well as raising a record sum to help the hospice run.

Springhill Hospice, located on Broad Lane, has raised a staggering £25,159 at their 28th annual Man of Rochdale luncheon.

This year’s worthy winner was Dave Richardson, a lifelong supporter and advocate of so many charitable causes, who was presented with the award by Councillor James Gartside and Rochdale mayor Cllr. Ali Ahmed.

The event, hosted for a second year running at Rochdale Golf Club, welcomed the most inspiring and dedicated men from Rochdale and celebrated their hard work and achievements.

Kieran Mcdonnell, Chair of the Man of Rochdale Committee and one of Springhill Hospice’s Trustees, said: “It costs over £14,000 a day to run Springhill Hospice and provide patient care, and more than half of that funding needs to come from support within the local community.

“It’s gentlemen like myself and the others that attend the Man of Rochdale event who were fortunate enough to be in a position to assist with that vital support last week – now is the time that we all need to dig deep and help out this pillar of our community.’

A further four men were also shortlisted for the award, as recognition of their fantastic achievements: Tony Nugent, Wesley Dowd, Roy Down and Michael Bamford.

Carlsberg Marston Brewery sponsored the welcome drinks and former football Micky Quinn was the guest speaker for the luncheon.

The fundraising event was sponsored by Jackson Jackson and Sons, the raffle by Recruitment Solutions, the entertainment was sponsored by Performance Doorset Solutions.

A NEW survey has found that Christmas is cancelled for 26% of people in Rochdale as the cost of living crisis means they cannot afford to celebrate.

Almost one in six people, 15%, said they plan to buy no presents at all to save cash, with 17% not planning on buying a Christmas tree.

The findings come from a new poll of 2,000 shoppers from Inventory Planner, which provides planning software and forecasting for businesses.

The survey found households were looking at many different ways to limit their spending this Christmas, but were finding new ways to save money to make sure the Grinch doesn’t spoil the festivities.

Half of shoppers, 49%, said they were ‘worried’ about being able to afford to buy gifts for loved ones over the Christmas period, as well as 16% stating they will go without a turkey.

Over a fifth of households, 21%, also said they plan to spend less this year than they spent last year.

Sara Arthrell, a spokesperson for Inventory Planner, commented:

“Many shoppers in Rochdale face a nightmare before Christmas but they are finding clever ways to save money and make sure that the Grinch doesn’t spoil all the fun.

“With more than a quarter of consumers cancelling Christmas this year, many retailers are facing a nightmare in the New Year being stuck with dangerous levels of excess stock. Good inventory planning is vital.

Over a quarter of respondents found that the best way to minimise spending was to minimise travel and save money on petrol. Alternative cash savers included making home-made gifts this year, not using wrapper or seeking cheaper alternatives like old newspapers, or switching to cheaper Secret Santa gifts.

One in six shoppers, 17%, said they will be purchasing second-hand presents, and 15% will not be sending Christmas cards this year. The survey also found that almost one in five, 18%, of those polled will work extra hours to save up for Christmas, with 17% having already taken a second job.
