Mayfield celebrating season success story

-

ROCHDALE Mayfield held their annual Awards Evening for the U13s Girls, U15s Girls and Open Age Women last weekend, and what a fantastic evening it was.

The U13s team has absolutely smashed it this year in only their second year of Rugby League at Mayfield. They won both the league, going unbeaten throughout the campaign, and the U13s Cup.

The girls have really pulled together and the team is going from strength to strength. The future is very exciting for this set of talented girls.

As a special treat all the girls were given a Rochdale Mayfield personalised towel

THE U15s enjoyed an absolutely astounding season. They smashed it every week and just kept going and going. Again, this is their second season, with none of the girls ever playing RL before coming together at Mayfield and this year they won their league and did it unbeaten. The girls have an amazing bond and the determination is a credit to them! This is a special team and the future again is exciting.

THIS is the first year for Rochdale Mayfield Women’s team. They began their journey in August 2022, and have been superb throughout the 2023 season. The ladies get on average the same amount of spectators to their games as Mayfield’s NCL team.

They are fearless, have drive and devotion and have made this year something special. The bond this team has is superb and they are one big family that ranges from age 17 to 50+!

An absolute crazy bunch of girls that always have each others’ backs and have found a new lease of life. They’ve come across some horrific injuries this season, but the girls still turn up on match day to support each other. It’s exciting to see what will unfold next year. PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

THIS year’s Stephen Gartland Coach of the Year Award went to Paul ‘Wiggy’ Whatmough.

This award is given to a coach who stood out both on and off the pitch. It’s not just about team performance, but also the coaches attitude, attributes and respect they give and receive to their players. It also paramount that the coach has strong a Mayfield ethos and wants to make a difference to the club and drive it forward.

Wiggy is currently coaching two teams at Mayfield, who both have has successful seasons. He also helps out when needed with the U13s Girls team too.

Wiggy loves coaching the teams and the respect he gets back of both the Girls and Women is second to none.

Wiggy has the club’s ethos and values in his heart, shows passion, respect and kindness just like Stephen Gartland did himself.

A legacy is not leaving something for people, it’s leaving something in people.

Thank you to Shelley and Rammy for comparing the evening and to

Kayde for Djing for us.

Huge thanks to Head of Girls Vicky Molyneux and Assistant Coach, Joe Harte for their dedication in coaching these girls over the season.
