Carer tells radio host of struggle to support her mum

- BY GARETH TIDMAN

CASTLETON resident Jayne received a surprise visit from broadcaster Andy Crane, when he dropped in to her mother’s home to talk about the pressures faced by families who are providing care to an older relative.

During the visit, arranged as part of a recent campaign between home care company Home Instead and Greatest Hits Radio, Andy heard about the pressures Jayne and her family felt as her mother’s health deteriorated and how getting the right care in place was a huge relief.

A recent survey conducted by Home Instead revealed that 85% of people surveyed in the North West neglect their own health and wellbeing, while 65% struggle with their mental health as they juggle caring for ageing parents alongside their own families and careers.

Jayne found herself at a crossroads when her mother began to experience dementia symptoms.

Home Instead’s local office in Rochdale provided the support she needed, alleviating the overwhelming pressures and allowing her to regain control of her life.

Speaking to Andy, Jayne said: “We needed the help, it got so bad. Mum didn’t need someone who was just in and out of the door. It was very clear that we needed someone who could fit around our lifestyle and to suit what we needed as a family and that is Home Instead.

“The care professionals at Home Instead come in and my mum looks forward to them coming.

“If it’s nice weather they’ll go out on a walk or if it’s not, they’ll play cards or Boggle, and she really enjoys that.”

David Bradshaw, owner of Home Instead Rochdale, said: “We often encounter family caregivers like Jayne, who feel trapped and unsure of where to seek help.

“Accessing care can seem daunting but there are many options out there and we are always happy to talk through the options with people so they know what help is available.”

Home Instead Rochdale’s care professionals offer a range of care, including personal care such as help with dressing and bathing, home help, and companionship.
