Hamer tribute to fundraiser Moggy

- BOXING STEVEN CONNELLAN

HAMER Amateur Boxing Club and Community Fitness Centre has expressed heartfelt gratitude by donating £1,500 in honour of ladder-carrying community fundraiser Stephen “Moggy” Murry, who raised thousands of pounds for people within our Rochdale community.

The money raised by the community has gone towards a memorial plaque for “Moggy,” who sadly passed away on 5th August 2022.

The memorial is placed in “Moggy’s” beloved Sandy Lane end of Rochdale Football Ground, along with a seat cover depicting the Rochdale legend which is placed upon seats within the stadium.

£1000 of the community money raised will go to Adam Trennery and the ex-military veteran’s association for all the work they have done in orchestrating an extraordinary mini-live music event at the Empire, in Rochdale Town Centre, last year, who provided the venue for free, along with the incredible local bands, which included Queen Esque, 3 Guys 1 Box, Oasis Supernova, Raspberry Glam, Metavoltz, and Indian Summer, to help raise funds for the memorial plaque and seat cover.

The club has also donated £500 to the exparatrooper regiment who come to the gym every Thursday free of charge to do exercises, along with other ex-military veterans.

The club would also like to thank Bethany Connellan for designing the plaque and orchestrating a walk along Spotland Road with “Moggy’s” original ladders perched upon the shoulders of her father Steven Connellan, along with many from the Rochdale community, who made their way to Rochdale AFC Football Ground, who kindly allowed the ladders to be put on display during the game.

The Boxing Club would also like thank Steel fabricator, Jimmy Webster, for kindly donating the metal base for the plaque, free of charge.

Heartfelt gratitude also goes out to another fantastic local Rochdale couple, Nick and Pam Heywood,

who gave up their generous time, free of charge, to construct this incredible and monumental memorial plaque for our dear friend “Moggy.”

Appreciation also goes out to Rochdale AFC Stadium manager, Kevin Lowe, for permitting the Rochdale community to place the plaque in “Moggy’s” beloved Sandy Lane.

The club would also like to thank the Mayor of Rochdale Mike Holly for giving up his time to unveil this incredible work of art (plaque) in Sandy Lane, which was a momentous occasion and a remarkable chapter in the history of our Rochdale community.

Hamer Boxing Club would also like to thank the Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust, Ryan Bradley, for assisting them in arranging them to purchase the incredible seat cover portraying “Moggy.”

“Moggy’s” last incredible charitable act was to go up and down the

country on a bus to help raise money for the Jock Mcavoy fund, in-order to get a statue or a bust of our Rochdale boxing legend to inspire future generations of youngsters to participate in sport, which will help them

both physically and mentally.

Hamer Amateur Boxing club want to keep this venture going in honour of “Moggy” by also donating £800 of the rest of the proceeds raised by the community

towards the Jock Mcavoy fund, and if anyone within the community would like to help regarding this venture, then please ring Hamer head coach Steven Connellan on Tel: 07719 883088.
