Busy Explorers are leading the way

-

ST Milnrow Explorer Scouts have had an action-packed three months.

Through their youth-led activities and adventures, supported by adult volunteers, the Explorers have been encouraged to ask the bigger questions, think on their feet, be part of a team and always have a plan B up their sleeves.

By taking on the leadership of a session each, the Explorers are developing leadership and organisation skills as well as building their confidence in front of their peers.

The Explorer Scouts said: “We have a lot of fun in Explorers and do a lot of activities.”

In the short time since September, the explorers have learnt emergency aid skills, budgeting, have taken part in charity fundraising, map reading, as well as a night hike.

They even took part in this year’s Manchester Monopoly Run, a city-wide scavenger hunt for teams of scouts and explorers that puts their navigation, communication, and teamwork skills to the test.

Lead volunteer Margaret said: “It is great to watch the young people grow in confidence and to learn to respect each other as they are given more power to lead themselves at this age whilst being supported when they need it.

“St Milnrow Explorers are sure to have even more adventures and activities lined up for the coming months, however, they can’t offer the young people these opportunities for new experiences without the support of an adult leadership team.

“We are always on the look-out for new volunteers who wish to gain new skills and get involved; this is needed right from squirrels (four to five years) through to Beavers (six to eight years), Cubs (eight to 10 and a half years), Scouts (10 and a half years -14 years) and Explorers (14 years to 17)”.
