School band hits all the right notes at popular festive concert

A SCHOOL band, formed by a high school’s Head of Creativity, is now looking to hold a gig.

The as yet unnamed band from Whitworth Community High School comprises of Head of English Peter Williams, his son also Peter, a student in Year 11, and fellow Year 11 student Sam Biggs.

Peter, 16, said: “At last year’s school Christmas concert, Head of Creativity Miss Goff suggested that Sam Biggs join my dad and I on stage as he was a really good singer.

“We performed two numbers and they went down well, so this year we performed three – Live Forever by Oasis, View from the Afternoon by the Arctic Monkeys and Run, Run Rudolph.”

Mr Williams plays bass guitar, Sam is on lead guitar and sings, while Peter plays the drums.

Peter said: “It was proper good. You could tell that everyone was shocked as I started to play a drum solo and then the lead guitar came in and then the bass and then into the singing.

“Run, Run Rudolph was a song for everyone and half-way through Sam stopped playing. I thought something was wrong, then he started clapping and the whole audience was clapping along with him.

“We had only had two practices and one soundcheck.”

Peter, who has a drum kit at home, said his dad is now looking at organising a gig for friends and family.

Also performing in this year’s Christmas Concert was the school band, where Liam Jones, 14, played cornet.

Liam said: “I was sitting right at the front in the band so I got to see everything. I really enjoyed it when we played Jingle Bell Boogie because there was a great reaction from the audience.”

James Power, 12, enjoyed performing in a drama which also formed part of the concert.

He said: “There was a family who was in a car getting everything ready for Christmas and I was playing a nerdy geeky kid.

“When I was asked what I wanted for Christmas I said I wanted a new Oxford English Dictionary and everybody laughed, including the headteacher.

“The whole concert was a showcase of different school talents.”
