Man, 19, dies following new year crash horror

Car ‘lost control’ and hit building

A19 year-old man has died after a horror New Year’s Day crash in which a car ‘lost control’ and hit a building, police have sadly revealed.

The teenager, who hasn’t been named, was a passenger in the vehicle and two others inside were also taken to hospital injured.

Police said the car was being driven towards the Spotland area at around 7.20pm on Monday night when the driver lost control, causing it to collide with a building.

The car, which hasn’t been further described by officers, had earlier overtaken a ‘slower moving vehicle’, Greater Manchester Police said.

It’s understood the collision happened near to the Pavilion Indian restaurant on Spotland Road, close to Spotland Bridge.

Two other people were inside the car at the time.

Police said they ‘remained at scene and were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries’, which haven’t been further described.

The 19-year-old man died in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, a spokesman for the force confirmed.

Police have now issued an appeal for anyone with informatio­n to come forward.

The road was closed for a number of hours for accident investigat­ion work.

In a statement, GMP said: “Yesterday evening at around 7.20pm (Monday 1 January 2024), officers were called to a serious collision on Spotland Road in Rochdale.

“It was establishe­d that a car, containing three occupants, was travelling in the direction of Spotland before it lost control causing it to collide with a building after the car overtook a slower moving vehicle.

“Emergency services attended and all three occupants of the vehicle remained at scene and were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

“Sadly, a 19-year-old man, a passenger in the vehicle, passed away in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 2 January 2023), despite the best efforts of emergency services personnel.

“Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have dashcam,

CCTV or mobile footage from the area at the time of the incident - to please share it with officers to assist their enquiries.
