Inquest is told how teen was killed in M62 crash
ATEENAGER was killed on the M62 after the car he was in ‘lost control,’ an inquest heard.
Adnan Malek had just celebrated his 19th birthday when the car overturned on the motorway near Rochdale.
Police said Adnan, who lived in Trinity Road, Aston, died from his injuries after the Vauxhall Astra crashed into the central reservation. A brief hearing took place at Rochdale Coroners’ Court on Wednesday.
The teenager was a passenger in a car that ‘lost control’ between junctions 21 and 22, for Milnrow, Rochdale and Saddleworth, Oldham, at roughly 10.30pm on December 21. The vehicle then hit a central reservation barrier and landed on the opposite side of the motorway.
Adnan was pronounced
dead at the scene, coroner Joanne Kearsley was told, and was later formally identified by a friend. The driver of the grey Astra, also a 19-year-old man, escaped with minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was released under investigation, while another passenger also escaped uninjured. Adnan’s family were not present at the hearing but previously paid tribute to the ‘kind’ teenager in a joint statement, saying: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Adnan Malek.
“Ten days after turning 19, he was taken away from this world. The very world which lit up with his charismatic smile and melted with the kindness of his heart. A loving brother, son, uncle and friend to many, we will hold him in memory forever.
“Those who were fortunate enough to know him knew how much he would go out of his way for others. Keeping that in mind, we as his family, have decided to fundraise for charity in his name through Ummah Welfare Trust.”
Police coroner’s officer Emma Campbell also gave evidence at the hearing, saying the collision was the subject of an ongoing investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. Ms Kearsley adjourned the inquest until a review hearing on March 25.
