Schools in challenge to raise charity cash
TWO schools face a challenge of their entrepreneurial skills in a contest to raise money for a charity. The Youth Enterprise Challenge will see teams from Whitworth Community High School and Alder Grange School in Rawtenstall come up with enterprising initiatives, with all the proceeds going to Rossendale Hospice.
The school teams have each been given £50 to kick-start their fundraising activities.
The ultimate aim for each team will be to use the investment to generate as much income as they can to benefit people but there are other prizes for presentation skills, innovation and community involvement.
The challenge is organised jointly by Rossendale Hospice and Alder Grange School.
The launch event was held in front of the Mayor of Rossendale, Councillor Andrew Walmsley.
Joanna Williams, Senior Fundraiser at Rossendale Hospice said: “We rely heavily on funds raised by the community to continue our services and since the challenge started in 2015, it has raised almost £40,000.
“Our thanks go to all the teachers and students who have helped us.
“A big thank you to AC Ventilation who have sponsored the event!
“The Youth Enterprise Challenge also represents a fantastic opportunity for the young people taking part. They’ll work together in a team to organise their enterprising ideas, learn new skills including; budgeting, time management, report writing, public speaking, all relevant to their future careers.”
Joanna said: “Each year the students come up with some great fundraising ideas and it will be great to see how this new group of students rise to the challenge.
“I’m confident this year’s contest will be a great success too.”
The challenge will climax with a ‘Celebration Event’ at Alder Grange School when each school will present their efforts to the judges and the winners of six different categories will be revealed.
