ST ANDREW’S, DEARNLEY

-

WE had Bishop Mark with us at a special service last Sunday evening at which he led the Confirmation of our three candidates – two young people and one adult.

It is always a great pleasure to welcome the Bishop and no more so than when he is Confirming candidates.

Last Sunday evening was no exception.

It was a beautiful service and, no doubt, the candidates and their supporters, spent an evening they will never forget after first diving into our congratulatory iced cake.

Talking of this and on a similar theme, if you are over eight/nine years old and want to take Communion during Easter please see the Rev Rachel asap to arrange prep classes this month.

We are well into Lent now and you can pick up a Lent book to use at home from the book stall in the parish room.

Please leave a donation towards costs.

Don’t forget our Lent course is every Thursday at 7.30pm and is based on the film ‘Mary

Poppins returns.’

Tomorrow will be the third Sunday of Lent and a reminder that tomorrow week (March 10) will be Mothers day or Mothering Sunday as we used to call it – a day when we will welcome especially young families on Mum’s special

Sunday.

Tomorrow is also the first Sunday of March and in addition to our Holy Communion at 9.30am.

We will have Family Worship at 11.15am and

Evening Prayer at 5pm.

Family Worship is specifically designed for small children and, going off previous experience, is popular with young mums and their children.

We welcome EVERYONE to St Andrew’s and that really does mean EVERYONE, but it is especially encouraging to us to welcome young people to Family Worship.

The next meeting of the Mothers Union is on Monday at 2pm when the speaker will be one of our own, Roger Halstead, who will talk about his lifelong connection with St Andrew’s and of his career as a local journalist, nearly all of which he spent on the sports desk of the long-gone Oldham Evening Chronicle with a special interest in rugby league.

Please note that you don’t have to be in the

MU to attend – or even a mother, or even a lady.

Men will be welcome too - anyone, in fact, who wishes to hear what Roger has to say.

Incidentally, our branch of the MU supports a charity that collects toiletries for the Women’s Refuge.

They often come as unwanted Christmas presents so if you happen to have any please place them in the tub at the back of church

Now, a few ‘we need you’ notices.

First of all, we are looking for volunteers to help with our school visits while the children explore Holy Week and Easter. Each volunteer will be given one aspect of Holy Week to discuss with the children on March 27 between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

There are plenty of other tasks too... just ask Rev Rachel about them.
