Man dies in hospital after horror collision

A70-YEAR-OLD man who was seriously injured in a collision with a Land Rover died in hospital, police confirmed.

The collision happened on Halifax Road, near to Littleboro­ugh in Rochdale, at around 3.40pm on Wednesday.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene. The man – a pedestrian crossing the road at the time – was taken to hospital.

But in an update on Friday, Greater Manchester Police said he sadly passed away a short time later despite the best attempts of medics. He hasn’t been named, but police sent their condolence­s to his family and friends.

The driver of the Land Rover, a 29-year-old man, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He was interviewe­d by detectives and released under investigat­ion, pending further enquiries.

It’s believed the Land Rover Defender was travelling in a westerly direction along Halifax Road heading towards Rochdale town centre at the time.

In a statement, GMP said: “The pedestrian, a 70-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries and sadly passed away from his injuries a short time later despite the best attempts of medical profession­als.

“GMP’S Serious Collision Investigat­ion Unit (SCIU) are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.”

Detective Constable Carl Boydell said: “Since we responded to this incident and initially appealed to the public shortly after, the pedestrian involved in this road traffic collision has now sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and friends at this time. We are continuing to investigat­e and are appealing to the local public once again.
