Footballers hope their team can complete the treble

- BY CATHERINE SMYTH

FOOTBALLERS from Whitworth Community High School are hoping their team can complete the treble this year starting with winning the Lancashire Cup.

Year 8 boys Adam Jones, William Lloyd, Alfie Simcock, Harrison Wright and Charlie Platt all play for Pennine Juniors Black, which was founded by Harrison’s uncle Pete Drugan and the coach is Harrison’s step-dad Daniel Bourdon.

At Wigan, the players faced Winstanley Warriors U13s in the Lancashire Cup semi-final eventually winning 4-2. However, William, 12, only arrived at the ground five minutes before kick-off because he had forgotten his football boots and only realised when he reached Middleton, so had to hastily return home.

He said: “I had to warm up on the sideline while everyone was on the pitch, but 10 minutes after half-time I got onto the pitch, which is not bad to say I had left my boots at home.”

Although the Whitworth lads didn’t score any goals, they helped their teammates by laying a few of the goals on.

Adam, 12, said: “The pitch in Wigan was really muddy and it was hard work.”

It was 1-1 at half-time, but Pennine scored again and Winstanley levelled the score from a penalty. Pennine scored another two to secure the place in the final at Lancashire County’s ground on April 14 against Blackburn Eagles Reds.

Harrison, 13, said: “We are a good team and we play to a good standard. All through this season we have been playing really well.

“We have played less matches than the other teams at the top of the league, because of pitch conditions, but we have only lost one game this season in the league.”

Alfie, 13, said: “I feel very confident that we can go on to win the Lancashire Cup because of the way we have been playing, which has been consistent.”

The team is based in Norden and trains on a Tuesday at Metcon Gym in Whitworth and on Thursday on the artificial turf at Holy Family School in Heywood and play matches on Saturdays.

The young players are hoping to scoop three trophies by the end of May: firstly the Lancashire Cup, then the North Bury League Under 13 Premiership and the Premiership Cup.
