Baker calls time on pro RL career
ROCHDALE Hornets forward Kenny Baker has announced his decision to retire from professional rugby league with immediate effect.
Baker has been a consistent performer at Betfred Championship and League 1 level for a number of years, starting with four seasons at North Wales Crusaders, where he made 78 appearances for the club.
He went on to amass nearly a half-century of appearances for
Widnes Vikings over three seasons before spending the 2023 campaign with Swinton Lions in the second tier.
The 32-year-old joined the Hornets last September in preparation for the
2024 season and has made three competitive appearances for the club, all in cup competition.
Discussing the news, Baker said: “I know this may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but I have decided to call time on my rugby league career due to various factors including new arrivals within my family, work commitments and general wear and tear on my body from 26 years of rugby.
“I would like to thank every club I have ever played for along the way. It has been one hell of a journey, and I feel so lucky to have met a lot of great people along the way.
“I’m sorry to the Rochdale fans and my team-mates, but I had to make a decision for me and my family. I wish you all the best of luck for the future.
“I’d like to thank Andy Mazey and the Rochdale board for giving me the opportunity to represent this club.
“Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who has believed in me over the years.
“Thank you for every minute you have been there to support me no matter what especially my mum, dad and wife.”
