Adjustments pay dividend for Leevan

-

LITTLEBOROUGH boxing club’s Leevan Fong fought his 21st bout at the John Alker club in Urmston recently.

The four-time NW Champion and multi Box Cup winning boxer certainly knew when the bout was made he was up against a top opponent and a title-winning fighter in Bradley Dee, who boxes out of Trafford ABC.

The bout started with both lads rushing to the centre of the ring to gain control of the pace and take tactical advantage over the other.

Dee, a great mover, looked to put Leevan on the end of his long shots and use his obvious height advantage. However, Leevan came with the opposite tactic in mind and quickly went about business in shutting down the distance and staying in the pocket to exchange shots.

In the first minute of the first round the two boxers exchanged combinations. However, during the second half the round, Leevan was landing some telling shots and drove Dee back to the ropes, not giving his opponent any breathing space.

The first round, which was non-stop, gave Leevan something to build on and head coach Mark Oldham told him to continue the pressure but look to the body.

Leevan followed the instructions in devastating fashion and in the second round came out as fast as he had finished the first.

Straight away, with great head movement, Fong shut Dee down and let out a barrage of shots to the body, putting Dee to the canvas.

To his credit, Dee got straight up and after the eight count came straight back at Leevan.

However, by now Leevan was throwing multiple body shots and he gave Dee another standing eight count. The referee this time chose to stop the bout, giving Leevan the second round win by stoppage and also adding a good name on his record in beating Dee.

After the fight, Oldham said: “Leevan has already shown a lot of ability.

“However, his nutrition is now matching his training and he is starting to settle and give himself space to work. He has already won so much but all those who know him will tell you there is a lot more to come.

“Tonight he clicked and in beating the talented Bradley Dee in the way he did means his progression has come on since making these adjustments. If he stays on course he is capable of everything he wants to achieve.”
