Super Superhero Day for Hornets
ROCHDALE Hornets coach Gary Thornton hailed the club’s first Superhero Day a huge success as his side capped a memorable occasion with victory over Cornwall.
While the first team’s League 1 triumph was the showpiece event of the day, spectators were also treated to an U16s clash between Leigh Miners Rangers and Rochdale
Mayfield, a Learning Disability game between Hornets and Wigan Warriors, a Walking RL match featuring a Hornets side taking on Warrington Wolves plus a half time Superhero Dash Race and Supporters Bingo Night after the big game.
“It was a fantastic day, I watched the LDR game and the walking rugby match and it was great to see people out there on the rugby field enjoying themselves,” said Thornton.
“We had a fantastic turn out as well and massive well done to all Hornets and Matt Rigby (General Manager) for all the organisation he’s been involved with in putting such a great day on.
“I think it just showed the inclusivity of our sport and everybody involved, it was a joy to see so many people enjoying rugby league.”
Hornets won the League 1 clash 56-24 and Thornton admitted the enounter itself was not as entertaining as some of the other games on display at the Crown Oil Arena that afternoon.
“It wasn’t vintage, it wasn’t a classic but obviously we’re really happy with the two points and the win,” he said.
“Cornwall made it very difficult afternoon for us and I was pretty disappointed with some of the tries we conceded.
“We thought they’d come and try and spoil our players and get amongst us and rattle us a little bit and they certainly did that, but it’s two points in the bag, job done.
“We’ve got a few things that we need to fix up ready for bigger challenges ahead
“We gave away six penalties in the first 25 minutes which is not acceptable and then there was an altercation, a high shot and a sending off for a punch.
“But once we settled down in the last 15 minutes of that first half we got some points on the board and looked a little bit more relaxed.”
