YOUR FITNESS INSTRUCTOR

- JOSEPH TOMLINSON

That magic pill SUMMER is here and that week away in the sun is fast approaching... but are you ready to hit the beach? Most people I deal with leave weight loss, toning and muscle gain till the last minute – by that I mean four to six weeks before they go away. That’s far too late – but shifting a few pounds is something I can certainly help with in that timescale.

You certainly don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on quick fix fad diets, supplements, fat burners or juice diets – all of which I’ve seen people do in the past. These involve such radical changes to your diet that they are unsustainable, and therefore unlikely to deliver long-term results.

Lets say you want to lose 6kg (13lbs) of body fat in the six-week time period you have given yourself. It’s possible to lose more body fat with more calories/ carbohydrates, fats and without the fat burners fad diets and supplements.

It’s all about being in calorie deficit every day – burn more calories than you eat and you’re on your way.

By taking just 100-200 calories out of your daily amount will allow your metabolism to run like an inferno. You will be able to fuel your workouts in the gym and your daily energy expenditure will remain the same as your body has got the energy it needs to do all the above.

Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are all essential so don’t eradicate any of them. I would recommend using a macronutrient and calorie counting website to establish your daily needs.

I would recommend high intensity interval training to be the most effective way to shift those pounds. Circuit classes, interval training on the treadmill, rowing machine, exercise bike or anything you can give your maximum effort on.

Not only will this method of training burn the highest amount of calories but it will also give you the afterburn (allowing you to burn calories post exercise) Try to do three-to-four sessions a week.

You have been eating carbohydrates, fats and protein. You haven’t spent £100 on supplements. You don’t feel tired, weak and hungry and now you’re ready for the beach.
