AN 18-year-old from Haslingden has completed his transformation from a civilian into a Royal Navy sailor and is now one step closer to a career at sea.

Trainee Warfare Specialist David Clough arrived at HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s training base in Cornwall, in March. During a 10-week course he has been given a thorough induction into the Royal Navy, learning skills that he will rely upon throughout his time in the service.

The course culminated with the passing-outparade attended by families and friends.

The former Haslingden High pupil has following in the footsteps of his older brother, Ben, aged 21, who joined the Royal Marines three years ago.

David said: “I joined the Royal Navy to travel the world, doing something that is exciting and different each day.

“I was also inspired by my brother and although we are both part of the Naval Service, I wanted to do something slightly different.

“I approached training with a bit of trepidation and nerves, but it wasn’t long until I picked up the standards required.

“I’ve learnt a load of new skills over the past 10 weeks. Ultimately I’d like to get on the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.” ●● Trainee Warfare Specialist David Clough, a recruit from Haslingden, has passed his training to become a Royal Navy Sailor
