The money raised will all go to the charity Hope In Sri Lanka, of which assistant headteacher Sara Richardson is a trustee, to help children at Kallamusa Kadella orphanage, south of the country’s capital Colombo.

The orphans need the money so they can buy a generator to pump the 150 buckets of water a day they need from the well.

At the moment, the children have to collect the water by hand every day and last year one of the girls was struck by lightning while pumping the water. Lantern Parade will take place on October 29 at Tollbar Mill.

The parade starts at 5pm.

A lantern making week for adults will take place ahead of the event from October 3 to October 7 at the Globe Arts Studio in Stacksteads from 10am until 2pm.

FEARNS Community Sports College in Bacup will hold a Family Theatre Week from Monday, August 15 to Friday, August 19.

The week will feature a giant puppet workshop, singing, street dance and musical theatre shows Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Lion King. Shows

The generator will also be used for electricity at the orphanage.

Ms Richardson said: “As the children carried the buckets of water along the course, they realised what hard work it must be for the children at the orphanage to do it every day. However, I hope they also had fun.

“We’ve had a tremendous response from the children with the fundraising and have raised more than £1,000 so far which is amazing!”
