Students arranged their own stalls and there were more than 90 in the sports hall and around the school grounds.

Sixth Form students rolled up their sleeves and washed staff cars and a special rowing competition was held to raise money for a mountain trike wheelchair for Year 10 student Sam Ainsworth.

Assistant headteacher Elaine Edyvean said: “We had 350 students involved in the fundraising and they picked 50 different charities to benefit from the money raised on the day.

“We had national charities like Macmillan and then we also had local charities like Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, Rochdale Dog Rescue, Reuben’s Retreat and several stalls for Derian House Children’s Hospice.

She added: “I am delighted about how much they raised – almost £4,000 – and it was particularly nice to see so many year sevens getting involved in their first year at the school.”

Year 10 student Leah Ogden arranged a lucky dip stall to raise money for a friend’s son, Tyler Longden, who has leukaemia and lives in Bolton.

She said: “Tyler is only two and I have been raising money because they want to send him on a holiday to Disneyworld.”

Teachers in the stocks and the henna hand painting stalls were a huge hit, as was the Asian food.

Another unusual stall involved participants bursting balloons with a pen between their teeth to win sweets.
