DOCTOR Margaret Edith Grimshaw died on Monday, June 5, aged 88.

Doctor Grimshaw was a GP in Rossendale for many years.

She leaves four children Catherine, Anna, Michael Guy and Tess and two grandchild­ren Oskar and Adam.

PETER FORSYTHE

MR Peter Graham Forsythe, of Weir Lane, Bacup, died suddenly at home on Monday, May 29, aged 73.

A service was held at the Chapel of Rest on Wednesday, June 7 followed by cremation at Burnley conducted by the Rev Derek Allen.

Born in Crawshawbo­oth where he lived until moving to Weir in 1972, he was a former retail potato man for many years. He enjoyed reading and walking and in his younger days, he enjoyed cycling.

He was very fond of his dogs and cats and all animals.

He leaves his wife Margaret, daughter Vicky and her husband Kevin, grandsons Oliver and James, sister Jill and her partner Tim, relations and many friends.

DUNCAN GOODENOUGH

MR Duncan Goodenough, of Christ Church Street, Bacup, died peacefully in Pendleside Hospice on Sunday, June 11, aged 48.

A service will be held at the Chapel of Rest on Monday, June 19 at 1.40pm followed by cremation at Burnley at 2.20pm conducted by the Rev Derek Allen.

Born in Bacup where he lived all of his life, mainly in the Sharneyfor­d area, he was a self-employed stone mason for many years.

He enjoyed fishing and going to Heavy Metal concerts and was the former lead vocalist in Hybernoid who toured Europe.

He leaves his wife Joanne, sons Zack, Kane and Dylan, father Roger, mother Nellie, sister Anita, nephews and many friends.

GLADYS CARTER

GLADYS Carter, of Spring Brook House, Clayton-leMoors and formerly of Westbourne, Helmshore died at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on Tuesday, June 6, aged 83.

Gladys, who was a very special mum and grandma, leaves son Alan Richards and his wife Karen, and daughter Anne Simpson and her husband Bruce, five grandchild­ren David, Michael, Matthew, James and Michael, and great-grandchild­ren Harry, Archie and Sebastian.

Gladys was originally from Tyldesley and moved to Haslingden in the early 1960s.

Although well known for her time as stewardess at the Trades Club in Haslingden, she began her working life as a weaver in the local cotton mills.

She returned to weaving later in life where she taught weaving at Porritt and Spencer, before taking early retirement to look after her husband Lazar.

She enjoyed a number of hobbies.

These included dancing, knitting, holidays abroad and craft making, where she had previously raised over £2,000 for Rossendale Hospice making greeting cards.

The loves of her life were her children and grandchild­ren.

Gladys had a strong faith, and was an active member of Antley Methodist Church at Accrington.

Her funeral will take place on Friday, June 16 with a service at Antley Methodist Church, Accrington at 11am led by the Rev Jim Henderson, followed by cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

NORA VARLEY

MRS Nora Varley, of Lytham St Annes, formerly Entwistle of Stackstead­s and Waterfoot, died on Wednesday, June 7, peacefully in hospital, aged 91.

In the 50s and 60s she was the proprietor of J&N Varley Ladies Wear in Waterfoot and also worked as a supervisor at Lambert Howarth & Sons.

She retired to St Annes-on-the-Sea in 1996 where she enjoyed walking, bowling and spending time with her family.

Until she left the Valley in 1996, she was an active member of St Peter’s RC Church, Newchurch.

Beloved wife of the late John, she was devoted mother of Mary (Stockport), Catherine (Lytham St Annes) and Peter (Malta), dear mother-in-law to Martin, Paul and Johanna, wonderful grandma to Joanne, Matthew, Anna, Ben and Emily, and a loving great-grandma to Mya, Callum, Austin, Tabitha and Lucas.

Requiem Mass will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Lytham St Annes on Thursday, June 22, at 10am, conducted by Fr Peter Hart, followed by burial at Park Cemetery, Lytham St Annes at 11.10am.

Funeral director: David MR Jack Haworth, of Crawshaw Hall Nursing Home, Crawshawbo­oth, died on Wednesday, June 7, aged 91.

Jack was born in Reedsholme and grew up with his large family in Woodcroft Street.

Jack enlisted with the army in 1944.

After training with the Border Regiment served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in the 49th Infantry Division (Polar Bears) in Holland at the end of the Second World War.

Jack ended his service with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Germany.

Jack was a slipper worker, first with Broadleys, then for over 25 years with Hardmans at Warth Mill, later with Denric Footwear, Cloughfold and shortly before his retirement with Hirsts, Waterfoot.

Jack leaves two sons Duncan and Ian, daughter-in-law Maggie and granddaugh­ter Emily.

His funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 20, with a service and cremation at Burnley Crematoriu­m at 1.40pm.

Funeral director: Alderson and Horan, 810 Burnley Road, Crawshawbo­oth. MRS Dorothy Thornton Halstead, of Knowl Gap Avenue, Haslingden, died on Monday, June 12, aged 81.

She worked in the family business for many years at Swales Ice Cream.

Her hobbies included knitting, gardening and cooking, and she enjoyed travelling.

She supported lots of charities.

These included Rossendale Hospice, the RNLI and the Red Cross.

She was an active member of the Mother’s Union at St James, Haslingden, and a volunteer for the RNLI. She played an active role in the church.

Wife of the late Henry Halstead and mother of the late Andrew, she leaves loving son Stuart and daughter-in-law Shauna, grandsons Dorron, Jack and Sam, Dennis and Michael, and great-grandchild­ren Jack, Harry, Alfie and Charlie, Jessica and Josie and Daisy.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, June 23 with a service at St James Church, Haslingden at 10.30am followed by interment at St Helens Churchyard, Waddington at 12noon conducted by Father Terry Murnane.
