Special Ski Club race to huge medal haul
SKIING ON Sunday, Rossendale Ski Slope once again played host to the Special Olympics North West Regional Open Alpine Ski Championships.
The host team, Rossendale Special Ski Club (RSSC) were joined by ski clubs from around the Country including Surrey, the Grampians, West Midlands and Norwich to compete in both the slalom and giant slalom events.
In the balmy heat nearly 40 athletes all with intellectual (learning) difficulties showed incredible skills and determination. RSSC fielded 17 athletes from the local area, all of whom train weekly at Rossendale Ski Slope with a team of dedicated coaches. Included in the Rossendale Team were David Corr and Rebecca Owen both of whom represented Great Britain in the World Winter Games in Austria 2017.
Alison De Vial, event organiser and one of the founders of RSSC, said: “We had a truly fantastic day on Sunday, it was fabulous to see so many young adults and children attending the event and despite the unusually hot weather the athletes all gave 100%.”
RSSC did particularly well on the day with a trophy haul of over 25 medals including eight gold medals.
Alison wadded: “As always it is wonderful to welcome ski teams from around the country to compete in the Special Olympics Event.”
Rossendale Special Ski Club is ran on a wholly voluntary basis, open to all children and young adults with intellectual learning difficulties. We are always seeking sponsorship and donations to enable us to grow and develop the club.
