Dizzy height of workman causes a stir

-

COULD this be Britain’s daftest handyman?

This worrying photo shows a builder apparently fixing the gutter on a 35ft high, three storey building – while balancing on a ladder precariously perched on top of a Transit van.

And to make things even more dangerous, the men do not appear to be wearing safety gear and the van was parked on a blind bend on a busy main road.

A passer-by, who asked not to be named, snapped the picture outside the old Reform Club on Market Street in Whitworth, which is now apartments.

He said: “I saw him climbing up this ladder which was balanced on the van and every time he took a step the ladder bounced off the wall. “I couldn’t look.” After the picture was posted in a local Facebook group it was liked and shared scores of times.

One man commented: “I drove past them as he was walking up and I felt sick.”

Another poster added: “This is why women live longer than men.”

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “Any specific allegations of unsafe working practices need to be reported to HSE through the proper channels so we can look into them.

“Anyone with any concerns needs to contact us via hse.gov.uk.”
