Slyne stymie St Mary’s winning run

-

WEST LANCS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION HAS ST MARY’S .......... 1 SLYNE WITH HEST ..... 2 STEVE BAYES HASLINGDEN St Mary’s saw their three-game winning run come to an end when they went down to a 2-1 home defeat to a very good, slick passing Slyne with Hest team.

Slyne nearly got off to the perfect start when they had the ball in the net from a 1st minute corner, but the referee disallowed it for pushing.

On 15 minutes a great point blank save from St Mary’s keeper Joe Sipocz kept the scores level.

But St Mary’s gradually got a foothold in the game as shots from Tom Hulme Lewis Hanley and Scott Wylie went just wide of the Slyne goal.

Good and at times desperate defending kept Slyne at bay and on 35 minutes at the other end St Mary’s opened the scoring with a great ball over the Slyne defence from Johnny Welch.

He found Alex White who fired the ball in off the far post.

However, straight from the kick off Slyne went up field and levelled the scores.

Despite efforts from both sides the scores remained level up to the break.

The second half started well for Slyne as their slick passing football brought more chances, and on 63 minutes they made one count when a Slyne player found space eight yards out to give Slyne the lead.

St Mary’s went forward in search of an equaliser with efforts going narrowly wide.

A great chance to level fell to Darryl Holland but his goal bound effort was saved by the keeper’s legs to preserve Slyne’s lead, which they held to the end.

A spirited performance from St Mary’s sees them remain four points from safety and although they are still bottom of the table the games in hand could prove valuable in their fight against relegation.

St Mary’s put the league to one side on Saturday when they travel to Blackpool Wren Rovers ground to play Euxton Villa in the Semi Final of the Richardson Cup the match kicks off at 3pm.

The semi final will be quickly followed on Tuesday night with a trip to play new league leaders Garstang with a 7pm kick off.

Haslingden St Mary’s reserves had a brilliant 5-2 away win over Hesketh Bank Reserves.
