Exam joy for A star pupils
Star student SAM CARDY is making headlines after his A Levels — but in a few years’ time he could be writing them.
Budding journalist Sam gained two A* in English literature, English language and an A in maths at ag6 and is now heading off to Lancaster University to study English literature.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure what I want to do but I’d like to be a writer — I’ve recently had some work experience in a newspaper so that’s one possibility,” said the 18- year- old, of Burnley Road, Love clough.
“I also took part in the Tomorrow’s Teachers programme here at Alder Grange and, who knows, I could be back here one day as a teacher.”
A wannabe legal eagle got some high flying grades on A Level results day. SULEHA BAIG, 18, of Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar, was awarded straight As - including two A* s.
The top marks came in biology and physics with As in maths and chemistry.
Suleha is now off to Durham University to study law and hopes to have a career as a barrister. She said: “After the exams I’ve been really nervous, I held on to the envelope for ages and when I opened it up it was a big shock.”
A week of worrying
ended in joy for straight A student MELISSA CLOWES.
The 18- year- old admitted she had been fretting ahead of A Level results day at BRGS.
But there had been no need for concern as she achieved A* s in maths, economics and chemistry and an A in physics.
Melissa is now set to study chemical engineering at the University of Manchester.
She said: “A lot of work has gone into this but I didn’t expect the results I got. I’ve been very
nervous and thinking about it for a week.”
An A Level student is ready to see his career take off after deciding on an aerospace engineering apprenticeship instead of university. DAVID GREEN
HALGH, 18, will now start working at BAE Systems after achieving the necessary results. The BRGS pupil earned an A in maths, B in general studies and Cs in economics and chemistry.
David said: “I am really happy with what I got and I hadn’t really thought much about results day until a couple of weeks ago. I’m really excited about the apprenticeship and meeting new people. It’s going to be a challenge and something completely different.”
Another three Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar pupils will all study science at university after finding a winning formula with their A Levels. ROBYN WESTERMAN, 18, was awarded two As and a B and will now read medicine at the University of Manchester. She said: “I worked hard and today has been amazing, I was shocked by my results.”
BAILEY HUNTER will study chemistry at Newcastle University after he achieved an A and two Bs.
The 18- year- old said: “I put it out of my mind this summer but today has been good, I was very surprised.” And his friend JAKE
DENCH, 19, is also off to Newcastle but will study physics.
After being awarded
an A, a B and a D he said: “I was a bit nervous but I’m very excited about going to university.”
JAMIE ROGERS, 18, from Bacup, a former pupil of Fearns Community Sports College, will read chemistry at Lancaster University after achieving A*, A*, A grades in biology, maths and chemistry at Burnley College. MARTHA BIRTLES, of Rawtenstall, is off to Oxford University to study English after gaining four A* grades in her A Levels.
The former St James the Less and BRGS pupil attained the grades at Bury’s Holy Cross College.
Martha said: “I am over the moon with my grades and now can’t wait to start my degree studies ( after freshers week of course).
“The teachers at Holy Cross were amazing so I felt well prepared for my exams and want to thank them all for their support.”
